- σχελίς
- σχελίςGrammatical information: f.Meaning: meaning vacillating, approx. `rib of beef, thigh-bone, side of bacon', after H. = τὸ ἀπὸ τῆς ῥάχεως ἕως τοῦ ὑπογαστρίου, also = κρέα ἐπιμήκη τετμημένα.Other forms: mostly pl. -ίδες (A. Fr. 443 = 724 M.[?], com., Luc., Poll.); σκελίς, pl. -ίδες (pap. IIIa, D. Chr., Poll.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin] (V)Etymology: Generally taken to σκέλος, semant. not impossible, but certainly not correct; the aspirated form would have to be secondary (Hiersche Ten. asp. 217). As however in σκέλος the writing σκ- is fixed (σχέλος only in an inscr. Delos IIIa), the aspirate in σχελίς, not counting the oldest attestations, is surprising. Then σκελίδες innovation after σκέλος? -- The variation is the one usual in Pre-Greek (not in Furnée).Page in Frisk: 2,837-838
